Ocean Education

SOAR with us!
The team at SOAR comes from a myriad of life paths, gifts, and strengths, but in the heart of each and every one of us is respect and intense love for the ocean. Awakening this in others is the driving force in all that we do, especially our education and community outreach initiatives, learning is a life long adventure and we'd love for you to join us.

We believe that in order for humans to come into right relation with the ocean, we need to spark curiosity and compassion, and increase knowledge in a holistic and applied way. Our experiential learning opportunities combine hands on science, art, storytelling, passion, and wonder to create a sense of connection and awe while also building skills and competency.

Collaboration is a foundational value at SOAR, and we are thrilled to partner with other organizations, such as the incredible folks from Lunenburg Whale Watching, Bluenose II, Coastal Action, Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, The Nova Scotia Sea School, South Shore Waldorf School, and SuperNova at Dalhousie University, as well as fantastic local tourism operators and ocean technology developers to create relevant, fun, and interactive material to be used in a variety of learning settings.

Geared for kiddos aged 8+ this half day camp is a fun packed collaboration between SOAR, SuperNova from Dalhousie University, and the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic!

Camp runs 9am - noon, Tuesday Aug 8th through Friday August 11th.
Registration is for all 4 days.

Through games and hands-on learning campers will learn the basics of boat design, coding, and echolocation. Putting this knowledge to use, the kids will build a boat around a Sphero, a code-able robot that will act as a motor. Once they've got them seaworthy and set a course, they'll launch their vessels into the harbour and have a chance to use an imaging sonar to track their courses.

It's sure to be a splash-tastic time for all!

Miss Courtney is calling our slightly older ocean loving kiddos, this camp is for you!!  A more science focused 9 year old may prefer this week over the younger group. Even though this camp is a bit more focused on the science there will still be plenty of myth, whimsy, and wonder. We will get to know some fun facts and identification tips for some of our local ocean critters before getting a chance to test our skills later in the week. The school is our base camp, but there will be a full day at Bachman's Beach so kiddos will have the chance to learn and explore. We will also enjoy 2 days in Lunenburg where we'll dive into hands-on ocean science. One of our town adventures will be a visit to the Fisheries Museum followed up by ocean themed crafting. Our other adventure has us out on the water with the amazing folks from Lunenburg Whale Watching Tours! No guarantee that we'll see whales, nature calls the shots, but we shall go to sea and see what we can see. And yes, there are spaces available for family members who want to join us, please contact us for details. Back on land the team at Sustainable Oceans Applied Research, SOAR, will show us a highlight reel from their imaging sonar and lead us through using some fun ocean science gear. This camp is for kids 9 and over as it does have a stronger science focus, which may be more challenging for younger kids.

WHALE TAILS

Whale Tails and Other Stories of the Outer Bay of Fundy is a collaborative compilation of first hand experience, stories, and animal facts partnered with gorgeous photos and inspired local art.   This unique combination not only conveys a wealth of information on some of the incredible creatures found in our waters, but it also explores the emotional aspects and intimacy possible in the human-ocean relationship. Our vision is for this to continually evolve, allowing us to add in new stories, wisdom, and species as time goes along.
